Hind stalking is an important part of the estate
conservation. If the number of hinds are not kept
down to a manageable level they can do vast amounts
of damage to woodland and reduce their own food
supplies so much that they die a lingering death by
starvation in winter.
The income
generated helps in the employment and training
aspects of the estate management.
Stag stalking,
although normally let with the Lodge, is available
occasionally. The price is £450+VAT per stag.
We can
accommodate up to 2 rifles per day.
Hind stalking
on the estate is carried out between the 21st of
October and the 15th of February. The deer range
over most of the 26,000 acres of moor and mountain,
foraging for food. To preserve the breeding the herd
culling is essential to keep the numbers down.
For those who
enjoy the stalk this provides some excellent sport,
with culling done cleanly and under the supervision
of an estate keeper. During a stalk you would be
likely to see plenty of wildlife, everything from
sundews (the carnivorous plants native to this area)
to eagles!
If you would
like to hind stalk on the estate, then you must be
prepared to walk up to eight miles a day, have the
appropriate outdoor weatherproof clothing and have a
current firearms certificate.
To book stalking
it is essential that we have at least one
month's notice.
We would
prefer clients to use their own rifles, though the
estate can loan firearms if required.
