Set amidst the
wild Scottish moorlands and mountains of Sutherland in the
Highlands, the Achentoul Estate is fortunate to be amongst some of
Scotland's most beautiful natural heritage.
The Estate runs a peatland management scheme, committed to protecting the rare plants and birds on the estate grounds. We work hand in hand with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Centre (RSPB) at Forsinard and have several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). When Ospreys were first spotted in this area 10 years ago, we built nesting platforms to encourage the birds to nest and return to the area year after year.We are proud to have been instrumental in the re-establishment of these beautiful birds to this area. When the hatchlings are old enough, the RSPB ring and weigh the birds. This allows monitoring of the hatchlings, giving an invaluable insight into their habits and travel. One hatchling has been seen in Papa Westray in Orkney! The estate manages 26,000 acres of prime moor and mountain, employing 2 people full-time. We are fortunate to be based in one of Britain's richest natural beauty spots. |
